The Red Cross and the Hospital in the Rock

On Wednesday we visited the Hospital in the Rock where they highlight the work that the Red Cross did during WWII, and the implications of nuclear warfare since the end of the second World War. One aspect I thought was interesting was that the Germans, and subsequently the Russians, would eventually conquer Budapest; however, regardless of the brutality of the Germans, they would allow the Red Cross facility to function. This was extremely important for the survival of civilians that incurred injuries during the bombings raids and sieges.

I was so surprised when our tour guide mentioned the Red Cross. Sometimes I distance myself from history too much because I find it difficult to relate to topics of the past. Recognizing the "Red Cross" however, made me realize that everything we were discussing is so much more recent than I had previously realized. Furthermore, just being in this city has opened my eyes to how everyone is still impacted by this history in the present.

I thought the Red Cross part was cool too and thought it was awesome they dedicated a room to the guy who made it happen. More amazing that they had his wax figure holding one of the original documents.
