European Culture Discussion

I have noticed that in both Budapest and Amsterdam, the culture is much more aware of and oriented around the success of small shops.  Though owning your own business is a great opportunity that we also have in America, issues such as road construction (in my experience) usually do not yield to the businesses.  In Green Bay for example, I have noticed that road construction and even sidewalk construction will often completely cut off access to local businesses.  In Budapest, the sidewalk construction was conveniently done in sections that moved throughout the day.  For example, those working at one end of the site were starting the job at the same time as others working at the same sight were finishing the sidewalk.  In this way, construction moved down the street as it was started and finished in sections throughout the day.  This allowed businesses to not be completely cut off by construction at any point in the day and to be free of construction sooner than if the whole sidewalk or road was torn up and re-opened all on the same schedule.  I also noticed a similar courtesy in Amsterdam, as the construction site conveniently set up new sidewalks and paths to businesses through construction that was sectioned off.

While that is true, the buildings did not seem to be done in stages. The buildings seemed to be done all at once with a protective covering over the scaffolding so to not drop anything.

Oh good point! I was surprised to see this as well. I thought it was really cool when this covering showed what the building would look like upon completion.

I thought it was neat that they did try to make sure you could reach the smaller businesses. I can't think of any times when I couldn't get somewhere due to construction. They're pretty conscious of that.

They did that on the churches we visited in Vienna as well. This made it easy to still take pictures with the church.

I can attest to Green Bay being absolutely terrible for construction and the closing of businesses. One highway in particular was being worked on when I moved there and two years later when I move away from Green Bay it was still being worked on.
